A lot of backyards in Iowa just sit there - unused, unfinished, kind of wasted. No real place to set up furniture, hang out, or just step outside without landing in the grass. That's exactly the kind of situation this Washington, Iowa homeowner was dealing with. So we got to work.
We installed a full stamped concrete patio using a reclaimed timber stamp pattern. It's one of our favorite patterns to work with because it gives you that warm, wood-plank look without any of the maintenance headaches that come with actual wood. The texture comes through clean and the finished surface is solid concrete - built to handle Iowa weather year after year.
Two sets of steps were part of the scope here, and that detail matters more than people think. The home had multiple entry points at different elevations, so getting both transitions right was key to making the whole layout work. Both step sets carry the same reclaimed timber stamp pattern as the main slab, so nothing feels tacked on or mismatched. It all reads as one cohesive design.
That's really what good patio design comes down to - making sure every piece fits together. The stamp, the steps, the layout relative to the doors. When it's done right, it doesn't look like something that was added to the house. It looks like it belongs there. That's what we aim for on every pour.
Stamped concrete is one of the best ways to add real, usable outdoor space to a home without the ongoing upkeep of wood decking or pavers. It holds up, it looks sharp, and done right, it adds genuine value to the property. If you've been thinking about putting a patio in, this is what that investment looks like.
